Extending University Resources to Help Montanans Thrive

These instructions are for PC users. They were written by a Mac user* just monkeying around on a PC, so if I can do it, YOU can!(*Mac users, you would do this all under "system preferences" and "desktop." You can figure it out from there.)

Terms:
WALLPAPER is a background image that stays on your computer desktop all the time (until you select a different one)
SCREEN SAVERS are like a slide show that rotates while your computer is sleeping, waiting, hibernating, or whatever you like to call it.
You can use the same types of images for either a wallpaper (also called a desktop).

STEP 1. Its' good to start by knowing your monitor's resolution.
If you don't know, you can easily check.

  • GO to the START menu
  • GO to SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL
  • CLICK on DISPLAY
  • SELECT the SETTINGS tab.
  • LOOK at the numbers that appear by the slider bar that says Screen Resolution.
Don't change these numbers, just look at them.
Note whether it says 1280x720 pixels, 1024x768 pixels, or 800x600 pixels.
  • Click cancel after you've noted the numbers.

STEP 2. Download a wallpaper or screen saver image (or images).

  • First you need a place to put your pictures. You will probably want to create a new directory (folder) called wallpaper (for example) somewhere on your computer where you'll be able to find it again. Or maybe there's already an empty directory (folder) called "My Pictures" just waiting to be used. Pay attention to where you put this folder, because you will have to find it later.
  • You will go to the MSU Extension scenic wallpaper download page.
  • There are three versions of each image. Pick the one that matches the screen resolution you noted in step 1.
  • Select the images you want and save them (or move them, if necessary) into the wallpaper directory (folder) you created. Don't put anything but your desired wallpaper images in this folder because anything that you put in here will become part of the automatic rotation that pops up on your screen when it goes to sleep.

STEP 3. Set your Screen Saver.

  • GO to the START menu.
  • GO to SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL.
  • CLICK on DISPLAY.
  • Select the SCREEN SAVER tab.
  • In the menu box under SCREENSAVER, select MY PICTURES SLIDE SHOW.
  • Now, click the SETTINGS box to the right of the SCREENSAVER menu box.
  • Under "Use Pictures in this Folder," click BROWSE.
Browse your hard drive to find the wallpaper directory (folder), where you saved the images, remember?
  • When you have the wallpaper directory (folder) selected, click OKAY.
  • Then click PREVIEW
The screen saver show now preview. (Press a key to exit the preview)
(If the image is too large or small, go back and download a different image size.)
  • You can fine tune other preferences for your screen saver by messing with the SCREEN SAVER OPTIONS under the SETTINGS button.

STEP 4. Set your Wallpaper.

To set a desktop picture, (AKA computer wallpaper) do steps 1 and 2, but instead of selecting the screen saver tab,

  • Select the DESKTOP tab.
  • Click browse.
  • Navigate to the individual image you want in your wallpaper folder.
  • Click on the image (so that it is highlighted.)
  • Then click okay.
