Pine Wood Derby Information
The Chirping Meadowlarks 4-H club will be hosting a pine wood derby race at the 2017 Great Northern Fair on Saturday, July 22nd at 3:30 p.m.
Basic kits are available for purchase for $5.00 from Cody Solomon.
A project workshop is scheduled for June 18, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Pepin Park.
Registration deadline is July 1st. Registration form.
This event is open to all including non-4-Hers, so invite your friends and family members to join in the fun.
Derby cars will be judged by appearance in each division. Race times will be set with consideration for those in the round robin competition. Cars will be weighed in and displayed on Wednesday, July 19th from noon until 6:00 p.m. at the 4-H Exhibit Building. Awards will be Saturday following the completion of all races. A Grand, Reserve, First, Second and Third place for race time and design will be awarded in each division.
The Race Divisions are: *age as if October 1, 2017)
Cloverbuds - ages 5 to 7
Junior - ages 8 to 13
Senior - ages 14 to 19
Alumni/Leader - 19 and up.
All cars must pass the following inspection to qualify for the race:
- Width shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.
- Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
- Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
- Minimum of 3/8 inch underbody clearance.
- Minimum of 1 3/4 inches wheel spacing.
- Must have minimum 1/2 inch nose width with nothing extending past for start pin.
- Axles, wheels, and body shall be from materials provided in kit.
- Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
- No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone.
- Cars may not ride on any kind of springs.
- All cars will be assigned a number when registered. Number must be clearly visible on car. (Numbers will be assigned at orientation or y contacting Cody Solomon)
- Car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices.
- No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car. (Add on such as a driver must be permanently attached)

Hill County 4-H Fair Entries Due
Fair Entry forms are due to the Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017 - NO EXCEPTIONS!!
The Fair Entry form is a two-part duplicate (white page and yellow carbon page).
The Extension office needs the original white page turned in.
When you bring in your Entry forms please plan on staying a few minutes so staff can review the Entry Form to confirm that it is complete.

Large Animal Showmanship Clinic
A Showmanship Clinic has been scheduled for Saturday, June 24th from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. This clinic will include beef, swine and sheep. The presenter will be Rena Fuller and the location is the Bigger Better Barn at the Hill County Fairgrounds.
Beef members are encouraged to bring their animals even if not ready to show (good experience). Beef exhibitors also please bring a scotch comb, show stick and show halter if available. There will be a demonstration on fitting a steer as well as showmanship practice.
Swine members do not bring your pigs. There will be pigs available for demonstration.
Sheep members please bring your lambs if you would like.
We will be serving burgers and barbecue pork after the clinic. Families attending please bring either a salad or dessert to share.
Please RSVP to the Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21st if you plan on attending so we can plan for the meal.
