SNAP ED

Limited income households often find it challenging to stretch food resources to cover the entire month, even when they receive food stamps. Some of these households include children, senior citizens and disabled individuals. Many limited income individuals are also being employed, although not at a living wage. As family members are employed, less time at home demands greater efficiency with food resource management. Food resource management is a critical skill for limited resource Montanans.

FSNE partners with numerous community agencies and organizations to optimize effective programming. Our program works to effect positive behavior changes in participants concerning nutrition and physical activity. The Montana Food Stamp Nutrition Education program provides educational programs for food stamp households and those eligible. In 30 counties, paraprofessionals (nutrition assistants) provide a series of lessons or single demonstrations with practical information and skill-building tips for choosing better foods, food handling, food storage and food safety practices.

MSU Extension SNAP Ed Programs

Did you know MSU Extension offers classes to support health enhancement in your school? For 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students we offer:

  • Nutrition education integrated with comprehensive health education
  • Hands-on, behavior based learning
  • Developmentally appropriate activities
  • Appealing, healthy foods for students to taste and enjoy
  • Weekly visits by a trained MSU nutrition program staff; 45-60 minutes per lesson, 6 lessons
  • Family newsletters
  • Limited physical activity integrated into lessons
  • Pre and post evaluations of student habits and knowledge

Food Safety

We offer food safety classes to community members working or volunteering in restaurants, cafeterias, community kitchens, and other food service venues as well as in the family home.

Feel confident in the food you purchase, cook, and serve to your friends, neighbors, or customers! We can provide a four hour course in food safety education which includes the following topics:

Food safety principles
Sanitation
Foodborne illness
Safe food handling
Receiving
Food Storage
Cooking
Holding food for hot & cold service
Serving foods

Food Preservation

The Flathead Reservation Extension Office partnered with the Flathead Community Food & Fitness Coalition, SKC Extension,

and the CSKT DHRD Elders Program to help plant community gardens and introduce access to local foods Reservation wide. During the fall harvest, our MSU Extension Agent, Rene, taught a series of classes on safe food preservation around the Flathead Reservation. Paticipants learned how to preserve and can tomatoes, strawberry jam, salsa, pickles, bison, elk, and fish. These classes will also be offered in 2009.
